Walking for Health

I am obsessed with the show Biggest Loser…. I think those guys are just so inspirational.  Most of us struggle with losing 10lbs, and yet they’re asked to face the overwhelming task of losing over 100.  Or, in the case of last night’s winner John Rhode, 220 lbs.

John is now sitting at 15% body fat!!

Anyways, today John’s doing the tour of talk shows, and Kelly Ripa asked him if he could give one tip for beginners, and John responded “Well, walking is always free”.

Amen, brotha!

First of all, walking is easy; there’s no special technique or learning curve, and it’s fairly low-impact, so everybody can do it.  Second, walking has tons of non-weight related health benefits, such as lowering blood pressure, increasing bone density, reducing cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of heart disease, etc.  Third, walking (like any exercise) releases endorphins, improving your mood.  What’s more is that walking outside, in or around nature, has proven to improve happiness, well-being, and energy (Mental Health News.org).  And of course, all that walking is going to reduce body fat and help you control your weight (as long as you’re also eating sensibly, of course).

I, personally, have always enjoyed walking, especially out in nature.  I find it very therapeutic, and I can actually feel it “in my bones” when I haven’t been out in a few weeks.  I also love walking with a dog because they indulge my curious spirit.  “Wanna go see what’s over there?” Ok!  “Hey, what’s down that trail?”  Let’s go find out!  A dog will never turn down a good adventure lol.

    OMG I TOTALLY watched the Biggest Loser finale last night too! LOVE that show (especially the finale!) It is crazy seeing the transformations of all the contestants! Great topic for your blog post today. On another note- LOVE your photos! Either you have a good camera or Ottawa is actually that beautiful! Thanks for reminding us how easy it is to exercise and how beautiful the city we live in is!

    Made a plan for a free and healthy date tonight walking around the lake in Sherbrooke to see the gigantic tree and Christmas light!
