Snack Ideas

Snacking can be tricky.  We make a big effort to get all of our nutrients in in our 3 main meals each day, so when it comes to snacking we sometimes see it as a freebie.  But just because it’s a “just a snack” doesn’t mean you should push your health aside!  Here are some healthy snack ideas for the health- and calorie-conscious foodie:

Candy Beet Juice

-1 small beet

-1 small carrot

-1/2 apple

-1/3 cucumber (optional)

-2-3 celery stocks (optional)

Juice all and enjoy!

I like this recipe because the beets, carrots, and apple all come together to make a really sweet juice, like candy.  If you find it a bit too sugary, add the cucumber and celery to dilute the sweetness a bit.  Consider adding a little bit of ginger too!

Chai Cottage Cheese

-1/2 cup 1% cottage cheese

-1/2 tsp cinnamon

-1/8 tsp nutmeg

-1/8 tsp ground cloves

-stevia to taste

-1/8 cup raisins or nuts (optional)

Blend all and enjoy!

Cottage cheese is one of those foods that blends well with sweet or savoury flavors.  Late at night when I know I shouldn’t be digging into candy and junk food, I reach for this cottage cheese instead and it actually does help to satisfy my sweet tooth.  And I still manage to get a solid 15g of protein!

AJ Sandwich

-1 slice whole wheat bread

-1/3 ripe avocado

-1 tsp jam or jelly of choice

Ok, this isn’t really a “sandwich” per se, but the title sounded better.  Toast the bread, top with sliced or mashed avocado, then schmear with jam.  You’ll be surprised at how well avocado and jam work together!
